Scholarship Winners Twenty-Two local students were awarded the 2020 Lois Hamilton Fontaine scholarships. The award is given annually in honor of the late Lois Hamilton Fontaine, a revered Westerly High School Latin teacher and Westerly College Club member. The Westerly College Club recently gathered via Zoom to celebrate its 2020 class of scholarship recipients. In its one hundred and tenth year, the Club awarded $35,000 in scholarships to twenty-two very deserving and inspirational local students. Sixteen of those students were able to attend and share their experiences, talents and dreams for the future. Though greatly impacted by the pandemic, these young people described their determination and creativity in advancing their educations at this difficult time. Among these gifted students there was a nursing student facing her first clinical rotation in the time of COVID, a chemical engineering student minoring in German with the intent of studying overseas, and a music performance major who was forced to perform his recitals virtually. There was a biomedical science major aspiring to be a dentist, a future data scientist at Pfizer who has a virtual comedy show, and finally a geology major with an astrobiology minor who spent last summer’s virtual internship working on the Mars recon rover “poking around the surface of Mars.” Each and every one of them had a special story to tell. Sixteen of the 2020 recipients were able to attend our January College Club meeting and were introduced to the Club members. They are pictured below.
All of the recipients are listed below along with their hometown, school, field of study and class. Jack Adams,
